Two Looks, One Heirloom: Inside Daneault With Penny Crook

Two Looks, One Heirloom: Inside Daneault With Penny Crook

For Penny Crook, the story behind Daneault began with a handbag and a memory. Following the passing of her father, Crook discovered one of her late mother’s vintage handbags tucked away in a closet. Holding the cherished piece sparked a realization that would eventually become the foundation of her company.

As the founder and CEO of Daneault, Crook set out to create handbags designed to be loved for decades rather than seasons. Her vision led to years of research, design, engineering, and perseverance to solve a challenge that had long seemed nearly impossible: creating a truly reversible handbag without sacrificing structure, beauty, or function.

The result is Daneault’s patented reversible handbag collection, designed to offer women two distinct looks in a single meticulously crafted piece. We spoke with Crook about the personal story that inspired Daneault, the challenges of bringing her innovative concept to life and her vision for creating handbags that can become treasured pieces, all while navigating her own battle with breast cancer.

What was it about your mother’s handbag that made you realize accessories could hold memories and emotional significance?

When I found my mother’s handbag, it wasn’t the style or the age of the bag that affected me most.  It was the memories it carried. It had been tucked away for more than 50 years, yet the moment I held it, I felt connected to my mother, my family, and a chapter of our lives that had passed. That experience made me realize that a handbag can be so much more than an accessory. It can hold memories, represent milestones, and become part of someone’s personal story. We carry handbags with us through everyday life, through careers, celebrations, travels, motherhood, and some of our most meaningful moments. That realization became part of the heart behind Daneault. I wanted to create handbags that were beautiful and innovative, but also meaningful. They are pieces a women could love, live with, and perhaps one day pass along with a story of her own.

Did you always have an appreciation for handbags and fashion, or did that discovery change the way you viewed accessories?

I’ve always appreciated beautiful handbags and fashion, but I never imagined I would one day become a handbag designer. My professional background was actually in banking, financial services, sales, and business development but not fashion. Finding my mother’s handbag changed the way I looked at accessories. Suddenly, I wasn’t just looking at a purse as something fashionable or functional. I saw it as something that could carry a story and create an emotional connection. That handbag had survived for more than 50 years, and when I held it, I wasn’t thinking about what it cost or whether it was still in style. I was thinking about my mother, my family and the memories attached to it. That experience helped shape my vision for Daneault.

I wanted to create handbags that women would enjoy carrying today, but that could also become part of their own stories. They should be pieces that are connected to the places they go, the milestones they celebrate, and the people they love. In many ways, my mother’s handbag didn’t just inspire a company. It changed what a handbag meant to me.

The idea of creating handbags that could become family heirlooms is central to Daneault. What does the word heirloom mean to you personally?

To me, an heirloom is something whose value can’t simply be measured by its price. It’s true value comes from the person who owned it, the life they lived with it, and the memories and stories that are passed along with it. Finding my mother’s handbag after so many years taught me that firsthand. It was just an object to anyone else, but to me, it was a connection to my mother, my family and our history. That emotional connection is priceless. That is what I hope Daneault handbags can become for other women. I want someone to carry her Daneault through important chapters of her life, and someday pass it on to a daughter, granddaughter, niece or someone she loves. An heirloom, to me, is really about legacy. It’s a beautiful way of saying, “This was part of my story, and now I want it to become part of yours.”

You set out to create a truly reversible handbag, what were some of the challenges you encountered while developing the product?

Creating a truly reversible handbag came with a unique set of challenges. We weren’t simply designing one beautiful bag; we were designing two complete looks that had to function seamlessly as one. Every detail had to be considered from both sides, including the construction, stitching, hardware, pockets, closures, and overall shape. We wanted the bag to feel polished and intentional no matter which side was being worn, without one side looking like an afterthought.

We also had to make sure the bag maintained its structure while remaining comfortable and practical. Reversibility can easily add bulk, so finding the right balance between durability, flexibility, and a lightweight feel required a great deal of testing and refinement. The most important challenge was creating a design that felt effortless for the woman carrying it.  Changing the look needed to be simple and intuitive, while still offering the quality, functionality and elegance we expect from a Daneault handbag.

How did the design and engineering process evolve from your original idea to the finished Daneault collection?
The design and engineering process evolved from a simple idea, creating a handbag that could offer two distinct looks into a much more detailed exploration of how to make that idea feel seamless, functional and beautifully executed. We wanted the bag to feel polished and intentional no matter which side was being worn, without one side ever looking like an afterthought.

As the collection developed, we tested and refined the proportions, materials, structure, and construction to ensure the bags remained durable while still feeling comfortable and lightweight. Reversibility can easily add bulk, so finding the right balance between flexibility, strength and ease of wear became an important part of the engineering process.  We also focused on making the transformation intuitive. Changing the look needed to feel simple and effortless, not like a complicated adjustment. Through repeated testing and refinement, the original concept became a collection designed to offer versatility without sacrificing quality, functionality or elegance. The finished Daneault collection reflects that evolution: an idea transformed through careful problem solving into handbags that feel natural to carry, beautifully considered from every angle, and designed to adapt to the woman wearing them.

What have you learned about yourself through the process of building Daneault?

Building Daneault has taught me that I am far more resilient than I ever realized. Entrepreneurship has challenged me in ways I could never have anticipated. I’ve had to learn an entirely new industry, trust my instincts, overcome setbacks, hear “no”, solve problems that sometimes seemed impossible, and continue believing in an idea long before other people could see the vision. But the greatest lesson came when my business journey and my personal journey collided.

While I was building Daneault, I was diagnosed with breast cancer. Suddenly, I wasn’t just fighting to build a company. I was fighting for my health and my future. Going through breast cancer while continuing to build this brand taught me a different kind of strength. There were difficult days, uncertainty, and moments when it would have been understandable to put everything on hold. But I kept going. My faith in the Lord, the love of my family and my belief that there was a purpose behind what I was creating carried me through. Today, as a breast cancer survivor, I look at Daneault very differently. It represents much more to me than handbags or a business. It represents perseverance, faith, family, legacy and the courage to keep pursuing a dream even when life takes an unexpected turn.

I’ve also learned that success isn’t simply about reaching a destination. It’s about who you become along the way. I started Daneault believing I was building a handbag company. What I didn’t realize was that, through the process, I was also rebuilding and discovering myself. Most importantly, I’ve learned that I can walk through incredibly difficult seasons without giving up on the future I believe God has placed before me. Daneault is part of that future, and every time I see one of my handbags carried by another woman, I’m reminded of just how far this journey has taken me.

As a female founder and CEO, what has entrepreneurship taught you about taking risks and trusting your own vision?

Entrepreneurship has taught me that sometimes you have to believe in your vision long before anyone else does. As a female founder and CEO, I’ve learned that taking a risk doesn’t mean you aren’t afraid. It means you believe strongly enough in what you are building to move forward despite the uncertainty. I came into the fashion industry without a traditional design background. My career had been in banking, financial services, sales, and business development. Starting Daneault meant stepping into an entirely new world and trusting that the skills I had developed throughout my career such as listening to people, solving problems, building relationships, selling an idea, and persevering through rejection, could translate into something completely different.

There have been plenty of moments when I questioned myself. I’ve experienced manufacturing challenges, financial risks, rejection, delays and countless situations where the easier decision would have been to walk away. I also faced breast cancer while building the company, which gave the word “risk” an entirely different perspective.  That experience reminded me how precious time is and strengthened my determination to pursue something I truly believe has purpose. I’ve learned to listen to advice, but I’ve also learned that not everyone will understand your vision, and they don’t have to.

As the founder, there are moments when you have to trust your instincts, make the decision, and be willing to take responsibility for the outcome. Most importantly, entrepreneurship has taught me that courage and confidence aren’t things you necessarily have before taking the leap. Sometimes you develop them because you took the leap. Today, I trust myself more than I did when I started Daneault. I know there will always be risks, setbacks, and people who say no. But I also know that some of the most extraordinary opportunities in my life have happened because I was willing to say yes to myself.

Fashion trends come and go, but Daneault is built around longevity. What do you think makes a handbag truly timeless?

I believe a handbag becomes truly timeless when it transcends a particular trend or season. It should be beautifully designed, thoughtfully constructed, and functional enough to remain relevant as a woman’s life and personal style evolve.  For me, timelessness begins with quality and intentional design. The proportions, materials, craftsmanship and details all matter. I want a woman to reach for her Daneault handbag years from now and still feel confident carrying it, not because a trend told her to, but because the bag continues to feel beautiful, useful, and distinctly hers. Versatility is also an important part of longevity.

That philosophy is at the heart of our reversible designs. A handbag that can transform, adapt to different occasions, and offer more than one look naturally has a longer life in a woman’s wardrobe. Instead of constantly replacing what she owns to follow the next trend, she can reinterpret something she already loves. But I think the most important element of timelessness is emotional connection. The handbags we carry become part of our lives. They travel with us, accompany us to important events, and quietly become part of our memories. That is ultimately what I want for Daneault. I don’t want to create handbags that are relevant for one season. I want to create pieces women love enough to carry for years and beautiful enough to eventually pass on. To me, the most timeless handbag isn’t simply the one that never goes out of style. It’s the one whose story never goes out of style.

What do you hope a woman feels when she carries a Daneault handbag?

When a woman carries a Daneault handbag, I want her to feel confident, beautiful and completely herself. I want her handbag to complement her life rather than define it. Whether she is walking into an important meeting, traveling somewhere new, going out for dinner, attending a special celebration, or simply moving through an ordinary day. I want her Daneault to make her feel polished and put together while still being practical for the life she is actually living.  I also want her to feel a sense of individuality. Our designs, particularly our reversible handbags, give women the freedom to change their look and express different sides of their personality without changing who they are. There is something empowering about having that choice. But beyond confidence and style, I hope she develops an emotional connection to her handbag. I hope it travels with her through meaningful moments and eventually reminds her of where she has been, what she has accomplished, and the memories she created while carrying it.

Ultimately, I don’t just want a woman to carry a Daneault handbag. I want her to make it her own, create a story with it, and perhaps one day pass that story, and the handbag, on to someone she loves. If a Daneault becomes part of a woman’s life story, then we have created something far more meaningful than an accessory.

What does luxury mean to you today compared with what you thought luxury meant when you first began your career?

When I first began my career, I viewed luxury as exceptional materials, beautiful design, exclusivity and craftsmanship.  Those elements still matter, but I know see luxury as something more personal: how an item makes you feel and how naturally it becomes part of your life. A Daneault handbag should make a woman feel confident, polished and completely herself. Our reversible designs also give her the freedom to express different sides of her personality with ease. Most importantly, luxury should grow more meaningful over time. A truly luxurious handbag should accompany a woman through life’s milestones, carry her memories, and perhaps one day be passed on to someone she loves. To me, luxury is craftsmanship with purpose. It is something beautiful, enduring, personal and capable of becoming part of a woman’s life story.

What does the future of Daneault look like, and are there new designs or innovations you’re especially excited about?

The future of Daneault is about continuing to create handbags that feel beautiful, distinctive, innovative and deeply connected to the lives of the women who carry them.  I’m especially excited about continuing to expand our reversible collection, which is at the heart of the Daneault story. I believe women want versatility without having to sacrifice luxury or craftsmanship and our reversible designs allow one handbag to offer two completely different looks. There is still so much opportunity to explore new silhouettes, materials, textures and color combinations within that concept. I’m also incredibly excited about The Rebecca, our mini conversion backpack. It was designed with versatility in mind, featuring a detachable front handbag and an innovative strap system that allows the pieces to function in different ways. Looking ahead, I envision expanding that concept with interchangeable front bags and straps in different colors, textures and patterns so women can personalize their Rebecca and create combinations that reflect their individual style.

Innovation is very important to the future of Daneault, but I never want to innovate simply for the sake of being different. Every new design should solve a problem, offer meaningful versatility, or give a woman another way to make her handbag her own.  At the same time, I want to remain focused on what inspired Daneault from the beginning: exceptional materials, thoughtful craftsmanship, longevity, and emotional connection. As we grow, I see opportunities to introduce new silhouettes, expand our patented and patent pending concepts, reach women around the world, and continue establishing Daneault as a brand known for innovation within the handbag industry. Ultimately, my vision is much bigger than creating the next collection. I want Daneault to build a legacy of modern heirlooms: pieces that are innovative enough to feel unexpired today, timeless enough to be carried for decades, and meaningful enough to someday be passed from one generation to the next. That is the future that excites me most, and continuing to ask, “What can a handbag become?” And then having the courage to create it.
