Celebrate Juneteenth by Supporting Black-owned Brands

Juneteenth commemorates the end of slavery in the confederate states on June 19, 1865. Although the Emancipation Proclamation ended slavery in 1863, it would take two more years for this news to reach the deepest parts of the South.

This coming Monday, June 20, 2022, will be the second Juneteenth officially recognized as a federal holiday in the U.S. The first recorded celebrations of Juneteenth took place around 1867, and the holiday was originally celebrated among communities in Galveston, Austin, and Houston in Texas, and in other southern states through parades, prayer, and other festivities. However, as time passed the holiday became more widely celebrated.

As a minority-owned media outlet, we fully support small and family-owned businesses. Our gift guides mainly focus on fresh small businesses and trending family-owned brands.

In observance of Juneteenth, we celebrate by recognizing the following incredible Black-owned brands. They are created by fearless and inspiring business owners and innovators.

IZAYLA

Founded by I'sha Dunston in 2017 in Los Angeles, Izayla is a contemporary womenswear brand specializing in luxury versatile prêt-à-porter.

The brand’s mission is tailored to three significant areas: representation, women empowerment and integrity. Representation is significant to I'sha especially being a Black woman in the fashion industry. She aims to inspire other Black women to follow their dreams and not be afraid of the fashion industry. Producing and keeping jobs in the United States was always a part of the of the plan since I'sha started Izayla. The owner and designer takes pride in domestic craftsmanship while ensuring ethical compensation for all of her freelance contractors.

Izayla has been seen on Kelly Rowlands and Gabrielle Union. You can find the ready-to-wear line at Saks Fifth Avenue or buy it online from their Instagram page.
